Yellowstone Part 1

The first full day at Yellowstone was amazing.  I had never been before and I think that we will be going back- it was that great and beautiful.  I didn't sleep all that great due to the "Grizzly Bears Frequent This Camp Site" sign.  I had visions of being attacked and/or eaten because we simply smelled of the beef we ate for dinner.  Obviously that didn't happen and the kids slept exceptionally well.  It got freezing at night.  About 25-30 degrees.  It's a good thing we got Jefferson his own mummy bag, which he is absolutely in love with, and Addison ended sleeping with Jason in his mummy bag.  We were out of the camp site by 7:30 and on our way to explore the wonders of Yellowstone, and man, did we find some.
We first stopped at this hot spring.  Jefferson thought it was so cool that the water was boiling.  It was amazing to me that I was super cold since the sun wasn't fully up, but standing on the bridge I was almost hot.  The steam the hot spring produced was incredible.
We saw Bison.  Tons and tons of bison.  And  Jefferson could not have been more thrilled.  One or two would be roaming down the road and we would pass them within three feet of our car.  Awesome.  They are hairy beasts, and of course we ended up leaving Yellowstone with a stuffed Bison for the little man.  He loves that thing.
We saw a lot of Elk as well.  We had stopped to eat lunch in Mammoth and just about 20 feet away from our car were two elk just hanging out like humans were no big deal.  Apparently that is really common in Mammoth. As long as you don't get too close they hang out really close to buildings and such. Way cool.
We saw a lot of Waterfalls and they never get old.  They are one of my most favorite natural wonders.  They are beautiful and amazing in their power and grace.
We took quite a few hikes and everyone was impressed that Jefferson was handling the steep hills and switchbacks so well.  A ton of women commented on that and it made me smile.  On one hike we took the trail down to the water and Jefferson was so excited because while throwing things into the water (a favorite past time) he found an "L" stick.  He was quite proud of it.
Another waterfall- the largest in Yellowstone.  So gorgeous.  Side note: We kept telling Jefferson that we were in Yellowstone and he kept asking where were the yellow stones.  I was glad to finally see some and point them out to him.  That saved us a good two hours of more, "Where's the yellow stone?" questions.
We took a couple hikes to get closer looks at the waterfall and it was so worth it.
Look how gorgeous.  And bonus- a rainbow!!
On our last hike of the day we had to keep stopping because Jefferson's little legs were getting so tired.  It was our 4th or 5th hike.  Jefferson just turned to me and said, "I just can't walk anymore".  Poor guy.  We also visited stinky geysers and a couple road side museums.  It was a fantastic day.
We were out for over 12 hours that day and the kids did great.  We lite a fire ate our dinner and hit the sack.  We all slept a lot better that night, bear and moose worries and all.
